Thanks so much for that! Also, I'd like to reread this book in the future because both the collapsing of time that you mention and some other historical stuff I've browsed on the "real life" nature of el Supremo's reign make this book more and more trippy the more I think about it. Very much looking forward to your post!Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-19126487384426917242014-06-05T10:14:23.565-04:002014-06-05T10:14:23.565-04:00Interesting that you thought of the book as 'n...Interesting that you thought of the book as 'novelising Paraguay.' I've been following a similar track in my thoughts: the collapsing of time so that different events seem to occur at the same time, the dips into prehistory and, as you point out, twentieth century history and the use of different languages (largely lost in translation) and Supremo's own views on what the people are and how his will somehow is theirs certainly suggests ambitions along these lines. It keeps reminding me of the way Joyce uses Dublin in Finnegans Wake as a kind of mythic psycho-geography. (Note to self - must return to and finish Finnegans Wake)
I have finished El Supremo and hope to post in next day (or two).Séamus Dugganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00574186409184247059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-36698319837379651182014-06-02T20:38:33.667-04:002014-06-02T20:38:33.667-04:00Thanks, Brian--glad you're enjoying the progra...Thanks, Brian--glad you're enjoying the programming here on the Supremo channel! Also, I'm particularly glad to hear what you say about those Hugo novels again. I have his Notre-Dame de Paris ready to crack open at some point, and I'd love nothing more than to have a similar experience to what you describe.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-45849733371977477652014-06-02T20:33:12.286-04:002014-06-02T20:33:12.286-04:00And I've even saved some of Roa Bastos' be...And I've even saved some of Roa Bastos' best for last!Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-19194441730188730522014-06-02T09:54:12.426-04:002014-06-02T09:54:12.426-04:00Great commentary Richard.
