He's easily one of my favorite writers now. As for Google Translate, ha ha, a mixed blessing at best for sure. Thanks for giving it a go, though, I appreciate the effort!Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-62737242313381011702013-07-04T05:30:47.308-04:002013-07-04T05:30:47.308-04:00I must return to Onetti soon. This sounds interesting, even through the fog of Google translate which is in this case 'a goat lame'.Séamus Dugganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00574186409184247059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-84654972437253078492013-07-01T12:19:48.125-04:002013-07-01T12:19:48.125-04:00I might guess that would be the case for other wri...I might guess that would be the case for other writers, Jill, but Onetti's much more about the particular than the symbolic in his use of details--so no on the scapegoat interpretation thing. As far as Onetti's own later imprisonment goes, my understanding is that that was a brutally ironic turn of events: an essentially apolitical writer being branded a political subversive of sorts for being part of a committee that awarded a literary prize to a work that was deemed inappropriate to the right wing government in Uruguay at the time. Your parenthetical question is well taken, though: many of the best/most important works in Latin America of the last century were written in exile or published abroad because they couldn't be published at home!Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1911087927983597831.post-41802332631577843462013-07-01T06:43:23.626-04:002013-07-01T06:43:23.626-04:00So I would presume Rita be the scapegoat for (what...So I would presume Rita be the scapegoat for (whatever)? In which case it would seem more like a political allegory instead of a crime novel? And ironic too because perhaps Onetti was also a scapegoat in his later imprisonment? (Well, of course, how many Latin American literary figures actually escaped imprisonment?) rhapsodyinbookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07041412748239010264noreply@blogger.com
