Nice list! I remember when you and Emily both read the Cortazar book and it sounded so interesting. It's on my TBR list. I hope there are lots more good books in 2012. Happy New Year!
ResponderBorrarNada is on my list as well!
ResponderBorrarSome of the others I've loved as well a few years ago. The others will be noted.
I wish you a very Happy New Year, Richard.
Strange list, no Finnish authors:)
ResponderBorrarFeliç any nou 2012!
I also read Swann's Way, in French, and am in the 2nd volume of A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs. here is my 2011 recap: http://wordsandpeace.com/2011/12/30/year-of-reading-2011/
ResponderBorrarWhere are the young adult books? Where are the paranormals and fairy tales? You've really got to expand your repertoire! :--)
ResponderBorrarHope you have a wonderful New Year!!! (if I could do that double upside down exclamation mark I would...)
Those books are superbly presented. I know I will pick up at least 3 from here for future reads.
ResponderBorrarManigong Bagong Taon!
Ah, a best of list from which I've not read a single book! You've made them also sound so good in your reviews, though (especially the Marías), that I imagine I may have to check some out down the line. (And every time I see Rayuela I think that I want to read it, even though I can never remember what it's about. There's something about that cover...)
ResponderBorrar¡Feliz año nuevo! para ti tambien.
Great list.
ResponderBorrarJe te souhaite une bonne année 2012.
One of those unique list that I know would be a great top 10 list yet couldn't understand the language in it. Happy New Year and hope you have a great year!
abrazo
a wonderful top ten richard have enjoyed following you this year all the best for 2012 stu
ResponderBorrarHola Richar!
ResponderBorrarsaludos!
Good stuff. I am amazed to have read six of them.
ResponderBorrarI just finished a different Saer novel, El entenado / The Witness, that was really impressive, an uncompromising novel of ideas, Borges made rigorous. I need to try Glosa now that it is in English.
Wow, 40% for Marías, nice! I'm glad you liked The Duel so much as well. Happy new year and I can't wait to see what's coming--especially that Bolaño!
ResponderBorrarI definitely recognise a likeness of tastes here - I read Rayuela in 2010, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles last year (I quite enjoyed it if you remember) and just picked up my first Marías (Corazón tan blanco). I'm about 100 pages in and liking it quite a bit so far. Happy New Year!
ResponderBorrar*Stefanie: Thanks--and belated Happy New Year to you as well! The Cortázar novel probably would have made my Top 5 had I drawn up such a list, so I'll look forward to hearing what you think about it when you get a chance.
ResponderBorrar*Caroline: I saw that! I wasn't sure Nada was going to make my list earlier in the year, but it had such strong characterization and a winning storyline that I would have regretted leaving it off. In any event, late Happy New Your to you, too!
*Merike: How nice to hear from you (even though I'm embarrassed that I still haven't read a Finnish author for you in all these years)! Feliç any nou a tu també!
*Emma: I'm so envious that you're reading Proust in French! I need to practice more this year. Cheers!
*Jill: I'm afraid that the paranormals and fairy tales and unicorn-friendly works will probably have the same sort of low profile list presence here again next year, but there's at least an outside chance that a young adult title will crack the Top 10 for the first time ever on the blog. Maybe you've heard about the work: Lolita. [Self-LOL, ha!] P.S. That upside down exclamation mark is as easy as typing in alt-0161, but ¡how sweet of you to wish me that for New Year's anyway--you're a true pal!
*Rise: Given that you've already read all those Marías novels, three more from the list sounds like a high percentage--I like how you think! P.S. Manigong Bayong Taon to you, too, my friend!
ResponderBorrar*Amanda: Hope you get to check out that Cortázar and/or one of the Marías titles this year, all of which would have finished near the top of the list had I ranked them numerically. Until then, ¡feliz año nuevo! a ti. ¡Saludos!
¡Saludos!
*Stu: Thanks--I hope you know that following your blog has been just as rewarding for me, so here's to plenty of happy reading ahead for you. Cheers!
*JoV: [Oops, sorry I missed you last time!] The list was just my Top 10/11 of the year in alphabetical order by author, and most of the posts I linked to are in English even if the books themselves are not. In any event, Happy New Year to you as well and I look forward to following your blog more regularly this year. Cheers!
ResponderBorrar*R.: ¡Hola y feliz año 2012 a ti!
*Tom: That's at least two years in a row that you've read most of my year-end favorites, which means that you're doing a fine job of beating me to the punch on some notable heavyweights. Anyway, glad to hear that (and then read why) you liked the Saer; he has yet to disappoint me, and it's nice to see him getting some pub from a fellow gourmand of the Argentine Literature of Doom!
*Nicole: Those Marías and Kleist volumes were awesome (as was Marías' All Souls, which would have garnered at least honorable mention had I gone that route), and more by each author will be coming this year for sure. Until then, very excited to see what you make of The Savage Detectives and I hope [pray?] it redeems my Tolstoy suggestion for you somewhat. Cheers!
*Bettina: Happy New Year to you as well, and I hope you're still enjoying Corazón tan blanco! I haven't read that one yet, but it's one of at least three Marías titles I have lined up this year (I postponed two of them because Tu rostro mañana was so intensely satisfying a read to me). ¡Saludos!
¡Saludos!
